I am Edward Nieuwenhuis, Professor of Paediatric Gastroenterology and President of the Paediatrics division. My speciality is rare intestinal disorders. During the next five years I will devote myself to the Child Health key strategy program.
What does the Child Health key strategy program entail?
Child Health is a broad key strategy program. We follow the child from conception to his or her 18th year of life. Both healthcare and research focuses on all the phases the child passes through within this line.
The Child Health key strategy program focuses on:
- fertility treatments
- chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatism and bronchial infections
- orphan diseases: rare disorders for which genetics and regenerative medicine should provide a solution
The Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital is already at the highest level in the healthcare area. By utilising the expertise from the other key strategy programs, we can also attain this top level in research.
My goal is to bring the children’s hospital to the highest level in research. In 2015, we will be able to perform the first intestinal stem cell transplant in children with a chronic intestinal disease.
